Progress To Date

  • Mica Action Group Objectives

The key objective of the Mica Action Group is to secure a government funded, administered and implemented redress scheme for all owners of dwellings located in County Donegal whose houses are affected by structural cracking caused by defective building materials.

  • Progress since inception
Since inception in January 2014, the group have made progress in a number of key areas in relation to this issue as outlined below:

From a political / lobbying perspective the committee have:

  • Briefed and presented  the issue to senior Donegal County Council (DCC) officials including the County Manager in County House, Lifford
  • Addressed a full meeting of DCC elected representatives in County Council Chamber.
  • Met with Pyrite Resolution Board and Housing Agency representatives in Dublin.
  • Made a presentation of the issues affecting homeowners in Donegal when meeting with senior Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government officials at the Custom House in Dublin.
  • Showed Minister for Housing, Deputy Paudie Coffey, TD around a number of affected properties in Donegal during his visit in February 2015. The Minister later met with the MAG committee who made him aware of the issues involved, while the Minister for his part outlined the Departments position on any possible redress scheme.
  • Met with public representatives at the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis in Derry and brought them up to speed on the current situation prevailing in County Donegal for homeowners with structural cracking in their houses.
  • The group have engaged regularly and continue to engage with T.D.’s, local political representatives and candidates in order to raise awareness. This has resulted in the issue being brought to the floor of Leinster House.

  • Awareness Raising
We have initiated an awareness raising campaign across County Donegal to inform people of the issue of defective blocks and to help establish the extent of the problem.

The group have engaged with print and social media to help raise this awareness across the whole county and thus far have achieved:

  • Interviews on local radio: "Highland Radio", and have had the issue covered by national radio station: "Newstalk" and RTE Radio 1 (see Links page)

  • Press coverage nationally in the "Irish Daily Star", locally in the “Inishowen Independent”, “Inish Times”, Derry Journal” and the “Donegal People” covering this topic.

  • Have set up a dedicated Website and Facebook page as well as e-mail and phone support to engage with and respond to affected homeowners.

  • Are in the process of raising awareness through a poster and leafleting campaign across the county
  • Have set up an on-line Registration Form to help establish the scale, the cause, the affected locations and the common characteristics among affected homeowners etc. This will be used to demonstrate the serious nature the problem and to further progress the key objectives of the group.

The committee plan to keep working and lobbying on behalf of affected homeowners until we get a satisfactory response from government on this very serious issue. We continue to ask anyone who is affected by cracking to their home due to defective blocks to please make contact with us as outlined below.
